Super Game Improvement Irons

ADAMS IDEA a30S irons

The ADAMS IDEA a3OS are considered the easiest-to-hit hybrid irons ever made by Adams and for good reason. As a strong competitor in the super game improvement (SGI) category of irons, the Idea a30S integrates 6 progressively shaped hybrids with two cavity-back short irons. Standard mens set comes with 3-9 and PW. Senior sets come standard with 4-9, PW and SW.

The 3, 4 and 5 irons are known as Boxer Hybrids. The Boxer Technology evolved to create high Moment of Inertia (MOI) for more forgiveness and a straight ball flight. The 6, 7 and 8 hybrids move a majority of the weight low and back in the clubhead for high-launching shots that are easy to hit from fairway and tough lies. These three clubs have a wide sole design that makes it easier to swing through high grass. The 9-iron and Pitching Wedge are cavity-back irons that have a large sweetspot.

This set is much different from a traditional hybrid set that may only have 2 or 3 hybrid clubs. The clubs have a boxy look that many traditional golfers may not like. The clubs are light and very easy to hit. These clubs are generally recommended for people with slower swings (i.e. less than 90 mph).

Callaway Big Bertha Irons

The Callaway Big Bertha ?08 iron set comes standard with 3-PW. In order to build their most forgiving set-to-date, Callaway Golf engineers designed i-brids. These clubs replace the traditional hard-to hit long irons and combine accuracy and control of irons with forgiveness and flexibility of hybrids. Specifically, the hybrid-like irons replace the 3, 4 and 5-irons before jumping up to conventional irons (6-PW).

Additional features include increased offset, a large clubface hitting area and a constant width sole for superb forgiveness. If you typically have trouble hitting the conventional long-irons and are not bothered by the hybrid aesthetics, then you might want to give this set a chance.

Cleveland Hibore Irons

Cleveland Golf has kept pace in the super game improvement line of clubs by offering their Cleveland HiBORE iron set. The three things to remember about this iron/hybrid set is Sweet Spot, Sweet Spot and Sweet Spot. Cleveland engineers designed the sweet spot to be the size of the entire clubface. This is reinforced by an oversized face and hollow construction that moves weight away from the face. This weight is positioned lower and deeper in the head to increase moment of inertia and accuracy. Center of Gravity is approximately 6 times farther back than conventional irons. The actual hitting area is about 28% larger than previous generations of irons.

The change in look throughout the set is very slight so that you feel comfortable with all of the clubs at address. If you have trouble getting your short irons (i.e. 6-PW) high in the air, then you should definitely look at these clubs. This set contains progressive sole width that promotes good shot-making by ensuring a shallow attach angle in the long irons and a progressively steeper attack angle through the wedge for increased launch angle.

Cobra S9 Irons

Like the other clubs in the super game improvement (SGI) genre, the Cobra S9 irons were designed to provide clubs for high-handicap golfers. These clubs benefit such golfers by ensuring higher launch, greater distance and more accuracy. The standard set includes 4-GW (Gap Wedge). Additional features of this club include a wide sole, low profile clubhead design, three-piece polymer topline, urethane insert and back cavity plate. The polymer topline and urethane insert are the two main characteristics that optimize discretionary weighting. The end result is a low center of gravity and high moment of inertia. Furthermore, the insert and cavity plate are incorporated together to reduce vibration.

These are very sharp looking irons. More importantly, distance and ball flight do not disappoint. The progressive low-profile shape help give the clubhead a more streamlined (thus, less bulky) look which helps with confidence at address. The standard steel shaft is a high quality Nippon NS Pro 900 shaft whereas the standard graphite shaft is a premium graphite design (YS-5.1). A drawback to this set is that it does not contain any hybrid clubs which is becoming more and more standard these days for SGI sets.

Callaway I-Brid Irons

Callaway went to extreme lengths to design the FT I-Brid iron set. Though, this can be seen in the price tag (~$1300). This set comes standard with 3-PW and Nippon steel shaft. FT I-Brid is the newest development in the Fusion technology line of clubs for Callaway. Heavy Tunite weighting in the sole is incorporated for higher MOI and ideal center of gravity (low and deep). The long irons are hybrid-form while the short irons come in the conventional iron form. Callaway did a good job to provide a set with consistent distance separation between clubs while maintaining high trajectories (for those who have trouble getting the ball up in the air).

One of the reasons for the hefty price tag is the fact that the face is made of titanium (much more expensive than steel). The main benefit of a titanium clubface includes a lightweight material (thus fast ball speed and increased effective hitting area). Furthermore, the tip of the shaft consist of a polycarbonate material that helps dampen vibrations. This provides an exceptional feel at impact. Additional characteristics of this club include an oversized design with increased offset and a wide sole for superior fairway and rough contact.

Cobra UFi Irons

According to the manufacturer, the Cobra UFi irons (Ultimate Forgiveness irons) are the most advanced set that they have ever made. The standard men?s set consists of 4-GW. Cobra engineers used a metal-matrix face insert (nine-metal alloy) to build each club. The alloy is 65% lighter than steel which allows weight distribution towards the perimeter of the clubhead. This, in turn, provides a high moment of intertia for great forgiveness.

The Cobra S9 might offer enough of a game improvement club for most golfers in need. That being said, if you want even more forgiveness, you should definitely consider the Cobra UFi irons. This set has the highest MOI and lowest CG of any iron set that Cobra has made to date. Unlike many game improvement sets, these irons do not have much offset which is generally preferred by the average golfer. Finally, standard shaft options include steel (Nippon NS900) and graphite (YS-55+ or YS-60+).

Mizuno MX-950 Irons

Mizuno has created the MX-950 irons to be a contender in the super game-improvement genre of clubs. The set consists of a pair of wood-like hybrids (3 and 4), three hollow-back hybrid irons (5,6,7) and carbon steel short irons for soft feel. The MX-950?s are unique because they can be custom built to fit your needs.

Mizuno has traditionally been known for creating player irons (for better players). It is extremely uncommon to have SGI irons that are forged but Mizuno has done just that. The 3 and 4 hybrids can have the lie and loft adjusted and feature internal tungsten weights to increase MOI. The 5-7 irons also have tungsten weights positioned for maximum forgiveness and consistency. From 5-LW, you will see a nickel chrome-plated with mirror satin finish which provides durability and also eliminates glare. Furthermore, the modified U-grooves are engineered to produce ideal spin rate. Finally, the Mizuno MX-950 irons have a wide-sole design for players in need of an oversized clubface. You won?t get the most distance out of these clubs, but this will depend on your loft customizations.

Nike SasQuatch Sumo Squared Iron/Hybrid Set

For those that like hybrids (and you know who you are), the SasQuatch Sumo Squared iron/hybrid set might be just what you need. There are a total of four hybrids (#3-#7) which is typically too much for low- to mid-handicap golfers. The standard set includes 3-GW. Nike created this set using their ?powerbow? design that shifts weight to the perimeter for more forgiveness.

The SasQuatch Sumo Squared irons and hybrids are loaded with other features and technological improvements. The clubface is a cryogenic-steel material designed to increase ball speed. There is a polymer insert installed for good feel (less vibration). The Sasquatch Sumo Squared set has improved upon its predecessor (Sasquatch Sumo set) by having a longer blade length, wider sole and lower profile. Also, the Mitsubishi Diamana graphite shaft that is offered is an excellent shaft for those with slower swings.

TaylorMade r7 CGB MAX Irons

TaylorMade has designed their r7 CGB Max 3-PW iron set to be the longest and easiest to hit model in their current lineup. These attributes are realized due to the thin, high strength clubface and oversized design. The lightweight stock shaft definitely contributes to faster swing speeds. The clubface also has a high COR (coefficient of restitution) for faster ball speed and thus, more distance. Additionally, the large clubhead also has tungsten weights for high MOI.

In the looks department for SGI irons, the TaylorMade r7 CGB Max set might have the other clubs beat. They don?t look as bulky as the average SGI set but still provide the benefits needed by high-handicap golfers. These irons are very easy to hit and also give you a good amount of distance. If you shoot in the 100?s, this might be the set for you.
